I know you adore your sweetheart. You are convinced you will be together forever in perfect joy and happiness. Cupid will hover over you all the days of your lives. Dear Prepper, I hope this is true. But chances are, it’s not. About half of all marriages end in divorce. And women live longer than men – it just is what it is. So we will hope for the best, but always have a plan for the worst. We will keep some money in our own names. We will know all about the family finances. We will keep up our education and development as we’re able. We will be ready to carry on.

You may think, “Ugh! How depressing!” No, my dear, this is uplifting and empowering! Don’t you consider yourself an equal in your relationship? A true partner? To me, that means if one of you is unable (or unwilling) to steer the ship, the other can do it. You are not dependent. You are strong, smart and capable. That means if any one person should leave your life, you can carry on. And if you have children, you can carry on for them too.

There is one person who has been with you from the second you were born and will be there until you take your last breath – you. And you need to take amazing care of her. The more prepared she is, the better.
